War in Darfur

The war began in February 2003, due to ethnic conflict (not religious). 450,000 people were killed, with 2.7 Million displaced. Generally, it was the Sudanese Military against the Southern Rebels – however that is only a summary.

Causes

–   Drought, Desertification and Overpopulation

–   Cover up’s by the Sudanese government:

  • Arresting journalists
  • Tampering with evidence

–   UN decided on a resolution to sent in 26,000 UN Peacekeeping troops

  • Sudan didn’t agree, and launched an attack in the region.

–    International criminal court charged the president with 10 war crimes
